Transplant Procedure
Once the high-dose chemotherapy is completed, blood or bone marrow stem cells are infused via your central venous catheter. This process is similar to receiving a blood transfusion.
Stem cells then find their own way to your bone marrow.
Recovery of your white blood cell count takes about 15-30 days after the stem cell infusion.
Blood and platelet transfusions will occur.
Antibiotics will be given to prevent infection.
What are the post-transplant complications for allogeneic patients?
Increased risk of developing infectious complications post-transplant.
More susceptible to immune complications such as graft versus-host disease (GVHD) and rejection of the new bone marrow cells.
Requires combination medications to prevent infection and GVHD.
